I’d never thought of myself as a protective cowboy. But just hours earlier, I’d married a mail order bride like it was the 1800s. It was crazy to me that my grandfather’s will stipulated I had to be married to inherit the land he’d left to me.

Still, I’d done my part and gotten hitched. Except that I woke in the night to find my new bride crying as the snowstorm outside rattled the windowpanes.

“It’s OK. You’re OK,” she whispered to herself as another loud gust shook the house.

I cleared my throat, and she jumped. She probably didn’t hear me enter the room in my motorized wheelchair over the sound of the storm. “The house is sturdy.”

She glanced at me, frowning when she saw my face. I braced myself for her reaction, but she didn’t say anything about it.

“Sorry for waking you up. It’s just a new place and I’m scared. Maybe you could not be mad at me for that.”

I realized she must have assumed my look has to do with her.  It was a common problem. People assumed I was angry when I wasn’t. After a while, I realized it was an advantage. It got everyone to leave me alone. But I didn’t want this petite girl to think I was mad at her.

“I’m not angry with you. My face does this. It’s called a spasm.”

She glanced out the window, watching the storm. “It looks painful. Does it hurt?”

I recalled what she’d told me earlier today about being in a new place and feeling scared. The foster kid in me remembered what that was like. “What do you normally do when there’s a storm?”

“When I was little, I’d crawl into my big sister’s bed. She always let me sleep beside her.”

“Do you want to bunk with me?” The offer was out of my mouth before I could even think about it. I had been careful to place her in a separate bedroom. She stirred up feelings in me that I didn’t know what to do with.

She chewed her lower lip. “You’re a stranger.”

I growled the words, “I’m your husband.”

She frowned. “What does that mean to you?”

I didn’t know how to explain the tight feeling in my chest or the way I felt so protective over her, like I’d be her shield no matter what this world tried to throw at her. “It means you’re safe with me.”
